Kate looks to build

Kate Roberts, our top-ranked women’s triathlete takes another stop on the road back to full fitness this weekend, writes Mark Etheridge.

The 28-year-old Bloemfontein athlete has battled injury and sickness for much of 2011 but her last two races, in Kitzbuhel, Austria and Maputo, Mozambique have shown that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

In Austria she ended 23rd and then returned to Africa to win the African Championships in Maputo.

“I was always going to race in Maputo just to get the good points for Olympic ranking so I went over for a short visit to Maputo,” said Roberts from her base in Davos, Switzerland.

It was not a pleasure trip for Roberts, more like a hit-and-run job. “I left Davos on the Thursday evening, got to Maputo midday on Friday. I raced on Sunday morning and after the race I packed my bike and pretty much headed back to the airport. I was back in Davos at 4pm on Monday so I was pretty shattered to say the least.”

But Roberts was well aware of how much the effort was worth.

“It’s been a good week’s training and I’m now heading to Hamburg, Germany to race the WCS race on Sunday. I was happy with my race in Maputo, a solid race. I’m still trying to find good form but we’re definitely getting there.”

Hamburg will hopefully show just how far she’s come since her setbacks.
