Anderson out in Sweden

Kevin Anderson said goodbye to Sweden on Friday, going out in the quarter-finals of the Stockholm Open, writes Mark Etheridge.

Seeded fifth for the tournament, South Africa’s top ranked singles player went down to top seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils.

It was a tough encounter with the two matching each other all the way before Monfils moved through in two tough sets, 7-5 7-5 after 1hr 31min of action on the Centre Court.

Surprisingly Anderson was only able to come up with five aces to the six of Monfils. They were pretty even with first service percentage (71% for Monfils and 70% for Anderson) but the difference proved to be in second service points won.

Monfils converted 70% of his second service opportunities to just 24% by Anderson.

Monfils now plays Canada’s Milos Raoni in the semi-final. “I played strong but had a drop in concentration in the second set,” said the 10th-ranked Frenchman, who also said he would get his wrist checked after a diving return onto the hardcourt.

“I played strong. It was a different game tonight. Kevin went for his shots, it was easier to maybe move him around the court and challenge from the baseline.”

Anderson said: “I had my chances in the first and I picked it up in the second. “I didn’t have the serving day that I wanted, I wasn’t hitting my spots. To get broken again at 5-5 was tough. But I got completely back into the match. It just came down to a few points.”

Meanwhile in Moscow, our top-ranked doubles player, Natalie Grandin’s season came to and when she exited in the semi-final stages of the Kremlin Cup.

She and partner Vladimira Uhlirova went out to second seeds Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova in three sets. Once again Grandin and Uhlirova proved tough nuts to crack. They lost the first set 6-4, won the second 6-2 and then went down 8-10 in the decider.

Grandin and partner will share $10,550 for reaching the semi-final stage, pocket money for her return home to Durban after a long and exhausting season.
