Anel walks to personal best time for 10km in Europe

By Mark Etheridge

Anel Oosthuizen’s long walk to Rio continues to gather pace after she posted a personal best time over 10 kilometres in the Czech Republic.
While the women’s 10km is on on the 2016 Olympic track programme, her recent form will give her great encouragement as she chases the qualifying time of 1hr 36min for the 20km Olympic event.
She took second spot in the race through the town of Olomouc, Czech Republic. Impressive was the fact that her time of 46:35 beat her previous best by a gaping 2min 24sec.
‘It was absolutely freezing… literally,’ Oosthuizen told Road to Rio 2016. ‘The girl who beat me is Maria Czaková, the Slovakian I’m busy training with while I’m in Europe.’
‘Racing just six days after the 20km race in Dudince [Slovakia] meant there wasn’t much recovery time but the legs felt good. I’m definitely feeling much more positive and the time also shows positive things. Still, we were actually using that race as a nice speed session.’
Czaková clocked a winning time of 44:56.
Said a happy and, let it be said, much warmer, coach back home in South Africa, Carl Meyer: ‘She had a very hard 20km in Dudince and we knew it would be touch and go for an Olympic qualifier there due to the acclimatisation issues. But this 10km result shows all is on track for a potential qualifier on 9 April in Podebrady.’
‘This was just a hard tempo training race, not an all-out event so needless to say I’m extremely satisfied.’
