South Africa claimed four athletics medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games on Saturday.

Katleho Dyoyi’s third-place finish in the men’s 2000m steeplechase was South Africa’s first medal on Saturday – day three of the junior event.

The race was dominated by England’s Zak Seddon and Uganda’s Zakaria Kiprotich while the barefoot Dyoyi followed closely behind the duo. Zakaria led in the early stages but Seddon managed to overtake him in the second last lap and held on for gold medal with a time of 5:41.81. Dyoyi followed through with a 5:56.91 run

In the men’s discus final, Gerhard de Beer and Jan Kotze secured podium finishes as they won the gold and bronze medals respectively. De Beer’s throw of 67.44m was enough for first place as it cleared the field by 4.48m. England’s Nicholas Percy (62.96m) was second with Kotze (62.90m) third.

In the men’s 110m hurdles final, world junior champion Andries van der Merwe edged Australian champion Anthony Collins by 0.4s as he grabbed gold with a time of 13.44. It was South Africa’s fourth gold in the Isle of Man.
