Banyana going all out to bag bronze in Cameroon

Interim coach Desiree Ellis and her national senior women’s football team have one last chance to come back with a medal from the 2016 CAF African Women’s Cup of Nations.

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana face Ghana in the third/fourth place playoff in Yaounde at 16:30 SA time on Friday.

Banyana Banyana lost out on a place in the final after they went down 1-0 to defending champions Nigeria on Tuesday (29 November) in Limbe.

While disappointed with the outcome, Ellis says there is still a lot to play for. ‘As expected we are extremely disappointed for not reaching the final, I think we did everything possible to get there, but luck was not on our side on the day. The entire technical team and support staff are very proud of the performance of the players who raised their hands when a need arose,’ said Ellis.

‘Friday will be a sad match for us because our plan was to play the final on Saturday, however, we will play to the best of our ability to ensure we return with a bronze medal. We also owe it to the crowds who have come to support this tournament, to give them a good show.’

Despite not reaching the final, Banyana Banyana believe they have taken positives from the tournament.

‘We walk away from this tournament with a lot of positives. We have played a good brand of football since we got here, and it would be so sad if we don’t at the very least get that remaining medal on offer.

‘Also, we are glad that some of the younger players got a chance to be part of this experience, which augurs well for the future of Banyana Banyana,’ added Ellis.

Hosts Cameroon, who defeated Ghana in the last four, will lock horns with Nigeria in the final on Saturday.
