Blignaut lands new SA junior shot put record

By Mark Etheridge

Big Kyle Blignaut has broken his own South African junior shot put record at the Central Gauteng Championships in Germiston.

Saturday saw the West Rand athlete heave the shot an impressive 20.88 metres in the Under-20 division.

‘Yes, yesterday was a good day,’ Blignaut told Team South Africa.

‘I knew the record had a good chance of being broken yesterday because I’ve trained hard and at training I throw quite comfortably over the 21m mark so I should break it again soon… and hopefully at the World Junior Championships in Finland later this year I can get close to 22m and bring a medal back home.’

As it stands his 20.88 effort puts him first in the world in his age group.

His first throw of the day was a 19.50 and the second landed at 20.91 but with the steel measuring tape it was rounded of to 20.88.

His last throw was a 20.86 but he stepped out of the circle.

‘I was also happy to have Orazio Cremona [SA record holder] there. He also threw 20.67 and even though that was with the senior weight it was nice to have someone throwing with me.

‘It can be quite difficult competing against yourself because there aren’t too many throwers in SA that throw distances near 21m.’

Next up is the Grand Prix event in Roodepoort where he’ll be competing with the senior weight.
