Blitzboks blast to double win in Wellington

By Mark Etheridge

The Blitzbok rugby sevens continued their winning ways in Wellington on Saturday, winning their first two matches of the New Zealand leg of the World Series.
They opened their Pool A campaign with a solid 28-5 victory over Scotland but the second match was way more impressive as they whitewashed Russia 54-0.
In the match against Russia, Neil Powell’s men took some time to get going but once Seabelo Senatla had opened their account three minutes into play the floodgates opened.
Speedster Senatla’s try was his 104th in 21 tournaments and he would go on to score a second after the hooter had gone.
Other tries in the first half came from Kwagga Smith and Rosko Specman, the latter’s score an incisive glide-over direct from a line-out take from the right flank and just outside the Russian 22m area.
The halftime score was 28-0 with all four tries successfully converted.
The second half was barely 30sec underway before 15-man code veteran Juan de Jongh went straight down the middle to take the score to 33-0.
Not long after and Specimen got his second of the match after Russia had broken out of their own 22m in a rare moment of attack. Their advance was turned over and Specman didn’t have much to do as he went over.
With 54sec to go it as Western Cape player Dylan Sage, a relatively newcomer to the national set-up who scored after a short spell of broken play.
But the Blitzboks weren’t done yet as once again after the hooter had blared out, Chris Dry wrapped things up with a converted try to make it 54-0.
The win was the biggest of the day at that stage and the South Africans now face their biggest test of the day as they play host nation New Zealand in their final pool match of the day at 9.30am (SA time).
