Blitzboks hold off Argentina to book Cup semi-final spot

By Mark Etheridge

It was agonisingly close but a missed conversion by Argentina after the hooter had sounded saw South Africa’s Blitzbok rugby sevens side book their semi-final spot at the last leg of the World Series in London on Sunday.
The Blitzboks prevailed 21-19 after leading 21-7 at halftime.
First blood went to the Blitzboks after Rosco Speckman had found Chris Dry who had made a beautifully angled run from the left (see picture above).
That was a minute into play and with four minutes gone it was was Speckman who went over himself after a run-in of fully 65m after a well manufactured dive pass from the impressive Dylan Sage who is fast making his presence felt in the Blitzboks line-up.

But Axel Muller then got the Argentinians back into contention with a barged-over try from a close tap penalty.
Cecil Afrika saw service resumed for the Blitzboks after the halftime hooter after more good work by Sage. That saw the halftime lead at a comfortable 14 points for Neil Powell’s men.
The second half was a cagy affair before the match exploded into action. Just 50 seconds were left on the clock as Santiago Cordero went over after a quick tap penalty. The fact that Stephan Dippenaar had been yellow-carded made it no easier for the Blitzboks.
Just seconds later it was Javier Rojas who went over in the right-hand corner to make it 21-19.
But the conversion swerved right of the uprights to save the Blitzboks an energy-sapping period of extra time.
