Saturday’s IAAF Diamond League meeting in Paris produced a fourth and fifth spot for South Africans Henricho Bruintjies and Antonio Alkana.

The two Cape Town athletes were the only South Africans in action on the night.

Bruintjies ran in the non-Diamond League event, the 100-metre sprint, and had to undergo a nerve-wracking time of it, with first Emmanuel Matadi of Liberia and then 41-year-old St Kitt’s and Nevis veteran Kim Collins disqualified for false starting.

That left just six finalists. Bruintjies raced to a 10.23sec clocking as fellow African Ben Youssef Meite of Cote d’Ivoire, the reigning African champion, won in 9.99, the only finisher under 10sec.

In the 110m hurdles, African record holder Alkana took fifth behind Jamaica’s Ronald Levy.

Alkana recently ran 13.11sec in the Czech Republic for that record and on Saturday recorded a 13.24 as Levy ran 13.05. Alkana was slightly quicker in his heat earlier in the evening, which produced a 13.21.

Meanwhile in Austria, South Africans Carina Horn and Tamzin Thomas ran to gold and silver.

Running in Ried, Horn won in 11.31, and Thomas was second in 11.67.

Speaking shorty after returning to the SA base in Gemona, Italy Thomas said:

‘The weather in Austria wasn’t great but I still had a great time.

‘My next race is Wednesday in Cleta Ligure, where I’ll be racing both the 100 and 200m.’
