Cameron van der Burgh got Team South Africa’s swimming challenge underway in the first session of swimming on the eighth day of the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai on Sunday.

In the 100-metre breaststroke semi-finals, Van der Burgh successfully qualified for Monday’s night’s final when he touched the wall in a time of 1min 00.07sec, ending in fifth place. The fastest qualifier was Norway’s Alexander dale Oen in 59.37.

ÔÇ£I am happy with my result and prefer not to have the pressure on me for the final,ÔÇØ said Van der Burgh afterwards.

Roland Schoeman narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 50m butterfly finals when he touched the wall in ninth place with a time of 23.48.

Meanwhile in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay, the quartet of Graeme Moore, Darian Townsend, Gideon Louw and Leigh Shankland ended in sixth position with a time of 3:13.38. Australia took the gold in 3:11.00 while France (3:11.14) and the USA (3:11.96) took the silver and bronze respectively.

A total of seven South Africans were in action on day one of the swimming programme, which saw African champion Vanessa Mohr narrowly failing to qualify for the 100m butterfly semi-finals after missing out by just one spot.

In the 200m individual medley, Kathryn Meaklim was two places and 0.18 seconds off semi-final qualification.

In other events, Neil Versfeld finished 34th in the 100m breaststroke, Heerden Herman came in 16th in the 400m freestyle and Wendy Trott was 18th in the 400m freestyle.

Besides Van der Burgh, the other South Africans who will compete on Monday are Suzaan van Biljon (100m breaststroke) and Karin Prinsloo (100m backstroke).

In men’s waterpolo action, the South African team lost 7-4 against Brazil with goals from Bevan Manson (2), Nicholas Molyneux (1) and Jason Kyte (1), while the Brazilians scored through Bernardo Rocha (1), Henrique Miranda (1), Marcelo Franco (2), Danilo Correa (1), Ruda Franco (1) and Bernardo Gomes (1).

The men’s side will be taking on China for a 15th place classification on Tuesday while the women will be up against Uzbekistan on Monday.
