Champion SA sprinter gets two-year ban

Just days before the national track and field championships in Stellenbosch, national 100-metre sprint record-holder Simon Magakwe has been slapped with a two year ban for missing an out-of-competition dope test last year and will miss the national champs.
It was confirmed by Athletics South Africa president Aleck Skhosana on Tuesday night that the 28-year-old was found guilty of violating IAAF Rule 32.2(c).
‘The IAAF referred the matter to the ASA disciplinary committee in February and he was given an opportunity to defend himself,” Skhosana is reported by The Citizen newspaper to have said.
‘He was found guilty by experts who deal with such matters, and the minimum sanction for the charge is two years.’
Magakwe was the first South African to break the 10-second barrier when he ran 9.98sec in Pretoria. However he was unable to repeat the feat on the international circuit or at sea level.
The six-time SA champion had the opportunity to appeal the sanction but the window period has now closed.
The ban will be in effect until December 2016.
