Coach Barrow up for big global award

South Africa’s national rowing coach, Roger Barrow is in line for a prestigious award at the World Rowing awards, writes Mark Etheridge.
The rowing coach for Team South Africa at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in London and Rio respectively, Barrow is one of six nominations in the 2016 Coach of the Year category.
The others are: Alexis Besancon, France; Domenic Casey, Ireland; Noel Donaldson, New Zealand; Juergen Grobler, Great Britain and Nikola Bralic, Croatia.
Barrow, who was instrumental in getting five South African boats into finals in Rio, an unprecedented feat in SA rowing history, is the only South African nominated in the five categories.
Said an upbeat Barrow: ‘I’m very happy to be on the list as there are some seriously top coaches on it. I was on the list in 2014, with a Danish coach and Italian, and the Danish coach won. Let’s hold thumbs this time.’
The award winners will be announced on 2 December and the winners will then be honoured on 28 January 2017 at a gala dinner at the World Rowing Coaches Conference in Vancouver, Canada.
Rowing returned one medal for Team SA at the Rio Olympics this year as Lawrence Brittain and Shaun Keeling won silver in the men’s pairs.
