Coertzen aims to come out strongly on day two

Our top decathlete, Willem Coertzen ended the first day of the gruelling 10-event Olympic competition in 11th spot on Wednesday, writes Mark Etheridge in London.

He went to sleep with a total of 4142 points, behind leader Ashton Eaton of America (4661).

It was a frustrating day for the London based Coertzen who set a national record of 8244 at SA championships in Port Elizabeth back in April but he’ll wake up revived and ready to tackle Thursday’s final day.

The first day saw him doing the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-metere.

“I had a season’s best in the 100m and then personal bests in the high jump and 400m. But it was my long jump that really let me down and I only managed a 7.17 which probably cost me around 50-60 points.

“But it’s not a train smash and I’m getting stronger.”

Coertzen reckons that Thursday will see him come into his own. “It should definitely be my stronger day.”

Events that lie in wait are the hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 400m.

“I think the pole vault will be the decider. Obviously it’s hard to plan on what points you can get beforehand but I must say a personal best would be amazing.”
