Dlamini does the job with singles title in the US

There was more wheelchair tennis glory for South Africa at the weekend… this time in the United States.
Following Kgothatso Montjane’s two doubles titles in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, Bongani Dlamini continued the rich vein of form when he won the singles title at the EZMED Arizona Open singles title in Tucson.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) level 3 tournament saw Dlamini send Mika Ishikawa packing to record his first title of the year.
The 34-year-old Dlamini looked in control as he swept to victory and proved to be too good for the Canadian. Dlamini ensured he would head to this week’s Indian Wells Tennis Garden Championship, also an ITF level 3 tournament at Indian Wells with confidence after downing Ishikawa 6-1 6-1.
‘I had a good game plan today, everything worked out. I was match-ready. It is such a great feeling to start a year with such a huge win. It gives me a great confidence going into the Indian Wells tournament,’ said the country number two.
Women’s second seed Mariska Venter and the country’s No2 in the men, Leon Els, had early exits both losing in the first round. Meanwhile, Danny Mohlamonyane finished in third place in the quads event. The three will be hoping to do better and clear that hurdle in the Indian Wells starting this week.
Venter and doubles partner Lola Ochoa of Spain were runner-ups in the women doubles tournament after they went down 7-6 (5) 2-6 1-0 (6) against unseeded Shelby Baron and Marianne Page of the United States.
