Durban hosts champs

Volleyball South Africa’s (VSA) R50 000 National Beach Volleyball Championships takes place in Durban from 8-10 July.

According to Beach Volleyball co-ordinator and former beach volleyball Olympian Gershon Rorich: ÔÇ£The competition provides the ideal platform for the current national beach volleyball teams to prepare for the Olympic Zonal Qualifier scheduled to take place in Maputo, Mozambique from 15-17 July┬á 2011.

KZN provincial giants, Carlos Khoza & Protos Mngoma, intend to make maximum use of home turf and local crowd support to topple South Africa’s current number 1 and 2 seeds: Grant Goldschmidt & Freedom Chiya and Leo Williams & Jerome Fredericks.

After an absence of several seasons, a resurgent Andile Masinga & Quinton Mpepele will be a force to be reckoned with. The duo have spent long hours sharpening their skills to get back to their winning ways. Masinga is no stranger to the winner’s podium , as he and his former partner, Gershon Rorich won the inaugural African Continental Beach Volleyball Championship in Alexandria, Egypt in 2001. Their victory then was sweeter because of the presence of several seasoned European teams.

In the women’s section, Olympian Judith Augoustides and her partner, Emma Wyngaard from the Mother City will be trying to upstage the tournament favourites Palesa Sekhonyana & Randy Williams. Hot on their heels will be Capetonians , Natasha Strydom & Amelia Luyt, the tournament’s number two seeds.

Entry fee is R120 per team.

A technical meeting (at the main tent on the beach) will take place at 8am (8 July).

With the opportunity to rub shoulders with the best national teams local beach volleyball players are being urged by the organisers to enter in large numbers to add to the festive atmosphere of this July beach volleyball extravaganza.

The event will be held at two venues, Tongaat Sport Centre and UKZN’s Old Mutual Sport Centre (Howard College Campus).
