Grandin grinds it out

Top-ranked doubles player Natalie Grandin is through to the semi-finals in the Kremlin Cup competition in Moscow, her season-ending tournament before she heads home to Durban for a break, writes Mark Etheridge.

And it certainly seems as though Grandin wanted to make the most of her time out on Court Three on Wednesday.

She and Czech mate Vladimiar Uhlirova moved into the semi-finals in three-sets after beating Polono Hercog and Ksenia Pervak. They were out on court for a hour and 35 minutes but that wasn’t too extra-ordinary. What made this match something special was that fact that the final set went to an amazing 24 games before being decided 13 games to 11.

That meant that Grandin and Uhlirova triumphed 6-4 3-6 13-11. It was a close match in all aspects, aces being shared three apiece, double faults ÔÇô five to Grandin/Uhlirova and four to their Slovenian/Russian opponents and service statistics were also much of a muchness.

The third seeds will now come up against the winners of the match between second seeded Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova and Vitalia Diatchenko and Elena Vesnina in this $721,000 hard-court tournament.
