Grandin only SA winner

Kevin Anderson’s defeat in the second round, completed a testing Thursday for South Africa at the French Open, in Paris.

Anderson didn’t go out with a fight though, the South African keeping Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela out on the Roland Garros clay-court for 3hr 21min, writes Mark Etheridge.

Anderson won the first set 6-3 but then lost the next two 3-6 4-6 before levelling matters at 6-4 in the fourth. But the fifth set proved a set too far for the tournament’s 32nd seed and the final set was lost 6-2.

As would be expected the tall South African dominated the aces battle, serving up 12 compared to three by Chela. But Chela’s weapon was his consistency, he had a 90% first service percentage compared to 69% by Anderson

And the unforced errors column did not make for early morning reading ÔÇô Chela made just 15 while Anderson chalked up 77.

Anderson’s defeat came after our top ranked doubles player, Wesley Moodie lost in the men’s doubles first round while our top-ranked women’s player, Chani Scheepers also went down.

There was however some light in the gloom with Natalie Grandin posting a victory in the mixed doubles competition.

Seeded 16th in this category, her and Czech partner Vladimira UIhlirova accounted for  the tricky combination of Jelena Jankovic (Serbia) and Antastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in three sets, going through to the third round 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Kevin can just not afford to make 77 unforced errors at this level. Pity - he certainly gave the guy a run for his money though.
