Natalie’s Moscow move

Our top-ranked doubles player, Natalie Grandin is into the second round of the Kremlin Cup tournament in Moscow and is looking forward to heading back home after an exhausting year on the circuit, writes Mark Etheridge.

Grandin was in first round action on Monday and together with Czech team-mate Vladimira Uhlirova had little difficulty cruising into the second round.

The combination beat the all Czech combination of Eva Birnerova and Klara Zakopalova in straight sets 6-3 6-3 in a match lasting just over an hour on Court Three in the Russian capital.

Grandin and Uhlirova had two aces to none and were ahead in all other aspects of the game, breaking their opponents’ service on five occasions.

Seeded third for the $721,000 hard-court tournament, Grandin and Uhilorva now come up against the winners of the match between Polona Hercog/Ksenia Pervak (Slo/Rus) and Vera Dushevina and Mariya Koryttseva (Rus/Ukr) in the second round on Wednesday.

“This is my last tournament for the year,” Grandin told Road to London 2012 on Tuesday. Ranked 25th on the WTA Tour doubles listings, she and Uhlirova won a maiden WTA Tour title in September when they won the Hansol Korea Open. “I haven’t been home in seven months so I’m going to chill with the family and try and re-connect with my friends,” she said.

“This has been my best year so far and I’m very happy. I worked hard for this so it feels good to know hard work paid off. Especially since I’ve done this all by myself, now I’m looking forward to a break.”

Grandin’s next tournament will be the Brisbane International in Australia early next year.
