Hayes will be busy in Berlin as she focuses on Rio 2016

By Mark Etheridge

Paralympian gold medallist Ilse Hayes is in Berlin busy putting the finishing touches on her Rio 2016 preparations.
The T13 ace competed in Leverkusen (also Germany) over 100-metres last weekend as part of her training schedule.
‘It went very well,’ she told Road to Rio 2016. ‘Both the heat and the final were sub-12 (11.97sec.)
‘So I’m very grateful for that. The preparation is going according to plans and I’m very excited for the last few weeks. Time is closing in on us but I’m very excited.
‘This weekend I’m competing in the Berlin Grand Prix in both the 400 and 200m events.
‘And I’m looking forward to challenging myself in my ‘new’ event, the 400m. For Rio the 100m is still my main event but 400m is also part of the plan now.’
Hayes, who is visually impaired due to Stargardt’s Disease, which sees her having to rely largely on her peripheral vision, ran a 56.20sec for the one-lap sprint earlier in the year to be true, is still finding her feet in this event.
The 100m will be her go-to event in Rio where she’ll once again come up against Ukraine’s Leielia Adzhametova, the woman who improved on Hayes’ T13 record that she’d run in Brazil early last year.
The two won’t clash in Berlin though as Adzhametova is only running the 100m.
