Eight players will take to the mat for Team South Africa at the AUSC Region 5 Games which get underway on Friday.

The squad is made up of six boys and two women, spread around the country.

The men will be fighting over six divisions and the women in two.

Manager of the squad is Michelle van Wezel and she’s assisted by coach Preston Davids.

‘They all have a medal chance and in the boys I would say Vernon Henry in the -81kg division has the best chance of grabbing gold,’ said Van Wezel who is still active in the masters ranks and was herself a winner at this year’s Commonwealth Masters Championships held in Port Elizabeth.

‘And both girls, Jasmine Martin and Chante Labuschagne (-57 and -63kg division) have excellent prospects of getting gold.’

Other team members who will take part in the two days of scheduled competition on Saturday and Sunday are: Mosa Thetsane (-56kg), Regan Wilson (-60), Byron Grobler (-66kg), Ludwig Cross (-90kg) and Juan de Bruin (+100kg).
