Juniors for Moscow

Cycling South Africa’s Track Commission has announced their nine-strong junior track cycling team was selected to represent South Africa at the UCI Juniors Track World Championships in Moscow, Russia from 17-21 August.

Participating in the world championships is a first-time experience for all the team members and CyclingSA’s Track Director Corne Bence is optimistic about the team’s performance. ÔÇ£There might be some surprise medals for the team this year, but there will definitely be winners by next year’s event,ÔÇØ said Bence. ┬áÔÇ£We’re very pleased with the team’s preparation ahead of the World Championships. In the past there has been a mad rush with a last-minute one to two week training camp before the departure date. This year it is different.ÔÇØ

The junior track team recently completed an intensive training camp in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. ┬áSouth Australian Sports Institute’s assistant coach Ben Cook made a guest appearance to the enthusiastic reception of the cyclists.

ÔÇ£The coach was very hard on the team,ÔÇØ continued Bence. ÔÇ£There were no loafers at the training camp ÔÇô it was incredible to have an experienced and internationally renowned coach like Ben personally coaching our juniors. He was particularly impressed with young Jac Jan Steyn, stating that the power wattage Steyn is putting out now is comparative to that of some of the Elite Australian track cyclists.ÔÇØ

The team concentrated on the Team Pursuit and Team Sprint disciplines during their coaching preparation ÔÇô riders were then selected with the focus on these two disciplines and will also be used to fill gaps in the other five track cycling disciplines in Moscow.

ÔÇ£Preparations have never been better ahead of World Championships as they are this year,ÔÇØ concluded Bence. ┬áÔÇ£Although our main goal is to concentrate on developing the youngsters for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, there is already some remarkable talent within the team. The team will participate in one more training camp in Durban, which will be held one week before they depart to Russia.ÔÇØ
