Kevin, Chani out in US

Kevin Anderson went down to eighth seeded American Mardy Fish in the US Open in New York on Saturday.

Our top-ranked single player, the twenty-five-year-old Anderson lost in three tight sets, 4-6 6-7 (4) 6-7 (3) in the fourth round of the year’s final grand slam tournament, writes Mark Etheridge.

Its not often the case, but on this occasion he the aces battle 7-12 to Fish as well as the double-fault count 2-4.

The match which lasted three hours 20 minutes was close all the way with both recording the same top-service speed of 133km/h.

It was in the unforced errors department that the difference came as Anderson had 51 against his name to the 36 of Fish. Fish now goes on to play 11th seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next round.

Our top-ranked women’s player, Chani Scheepers also exited at the same stage.

But like Anderson she went out fighting and will take a lot out of her loss to seventh seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

The match lasted just over three hours and Scheepers took the first set 7-5. She lost the second on a tiebreaker 7-6 (5) and the final and quickest set was 6-3 in favour of the French Open finalist.

Hi Mark - they both did so well losing on tie-breakers! Very proud of them.
