Kevin wins, Chani loses

Twelve aces without reply saw top-ranked Kevin Anderson advance to the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament in Spain on Tuesday.

Anderson, who dropped one position to 35th on the ATP Tour rankings this week, beat Belgium’s Olivier Rochus 6-2 6-4 in a match lasting 1hr 12min, writes Mark Etheridge.

His reward is another match-up with Novak Djokovic, the Serbian who beat him 6-4 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the recent Miami Masters. Anderson, does however have a victory over Djokovic, having beaten him in 2008, also at the Miami Masters.

The lanky Johannesburg born Anderson had a first-service percentage of 63% compared to 74th ranked Rochus’s 57% but had an excellent 82% of points won on his first service.

Also in Madrid our top ranked women’s player, Chani Scheepers lost 3-6 3-6 to 16th seed Petra Kvitova in the second round.

Kvitova, a top-20 ranked player on the WTA Tour, fired down three aces to none by Scheepers and also had a better first-service percentage, 77% compared to 60%.

Meanwhile on the other side of the Atlantic at the Savannah Challenger in Savannah, Georgia Rik de Voest went through to the second round by beating American Andrea Collarini 6-2 5-7 6-4.

But his compatriots, Soweto Open winner Izak van der Merwe and Wesley Whitehouse both went out in the first round to local players Densi Kudla and Bobby Reynolds.

Another South African, Fritz Wolmarans who had also made the main draw, had to pull out before play started due to a back injury.
