Last gasp Kiwi try beats Blitzboks… now for Australia

By Mark Etheridge

A try deep into extra time saw New Zealand break Blitzbok hearts as the Kiwis won the final Pool A game of the Wellington World Sevens Series leg on Saturday.
After the Blitzboks had beaten Scotland 28-5 and Russia 54-0, the hosts came up trumps 19-5 in a game the South Africans thought they’d won as Cheslin Kolbe crossed with 42sec to play and a 14-12 lead.
That score had come after a fluffed offload by the mercurial Sonny Bill Williams had been pounced on by the Blitzboks and the little Stormers utility back had sniped over next to the post.
The successful conversion saw the Blitzboks lead 14-12 after the halftime score had read 7-5 in their favour.
With the full-time hooter having sounded, it was the Blitzboks’ game to lose. But a New Zealand side is never to be discounted and after being awarded a penalty in front of their own posts they worked their way up to the halfway line and on this occasion it was a Williams off-load that did pay off, and handsomely, as it freed up Joe Webber to go over untouched and torch Blitzboks hearts.
Earlier, Neil Powell’s charged opened the scoring with 5:21 to go in the first half after an overthrown Kiwi line-out was poached.
The New Zealanders took the lead with 4:01 to go in the match after powerhouse Akira Ioane had shrugged aside all Blitzbok tackling efforts like he was swatting flies.
The last gasp loss now sees the South Africans coming up against Australia in a Cup quarter-final on Sunday.
