Long jump ace Manyonga takes it easy after hurting ankle

Good news for South African athletics fans is that the world’s leading long jumper, Luvo Manyonga, has only sustained a slight ankle injury and is already busy with rehabilitation.

According to Manyonga’s agent, Lee-Roy Newton, there’s nothing to worry about; it’s just important not to take any risks before the World Championships in London, as there’s obviously a lot at stake for the Rio Olympics silver medallist.

Manyonga sustained the injury competing at Sunday’s Diamond League Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. He remained seated for some time in the sand pit after his last jump of 8.20 metres. He was clearly in some discomfort and clutching his left ankle as he received medical attention.

Tuks coach Neil Cornelius said Manyonga would only do light training for the next few days. ‘Depending on how his recovery goes, I might have him doing his run-ups at full speed at the end of next week. He could even do a few jumps.’

Manyonga’s next competition will be the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco, still more than three weeks away, on 16 July.
