Mapaseka makes merry

Gauteng ace Mapaseka Makhanya wrapped up her athletics season with victory in the women’s short-course event at the national cross-country championships in Tshwane at the weekend.

Makhanya clocked 14min 56sec for the tough 4-kilometre circuit. That put her 44 seconds clear of runner up Central Gauteng teammate Mandi Brandt (15:40) and a further 48sec ahead of Western Province’s Linda Hanekom.

Twenty-five-year old Makhanya, who set personal bests in both the 800 (2:03.36)and 1500m (4:08.18) in Europe earlier this year, now puts her running on hold for a few months.

“No more races for me,” she said on Mondayl “Now I’m hitting the gym, preparing for next season. Next season starts now”

As for the race: “It was great but the course was tough. Honestly after that race I thought myself ‘I quit’… that’s how hard it was. And most of the people in the race were 800m girls.”

The men’s short race was won by another track star in Makhanya’s Central Gauteng teammate and 1500m specialist Juan van Deventer. He clocked 12:04 to beat Dean Brummer of Gauteng North by four seconds.
