Meintjes impresses with sixth-place in the mountains

Rising cycling star Louis Meintjes continued to impress when he clawed his way to sixth place in the fifth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine in France on Thursday.
This was the first mountain stage of the tour and the MTN-Qhubeka duo of Meintjes and Eritrean Daniel Teklehaimanot both had their time to shine.
Meintjes a former world Under-23 road championships runner-up, finished the summit finish in strong fashion while Teklehaimanot extended his lead in the King of the Mountain competition.
Riders tackled more than 4000 metres of climbing with five categorised climbs featuring in the 161-kilometre stage.
Teklehaimanot garnered a good few points in the early stages before Team Sky started dominating the climbs, although they were unable to haul in AG2R La Mondiale’s Romain Bardet in the end.
Meintjes ended 50sec adrift of the pace, great going for the young 23-year-old.
He said afterwards: ‘The legs felt good again. The team was absolutely amazing today, we have a really good vibe going in the team and everyone is just supporting everyone else, it is just an amazing team we have here. Today was also one of the stages we re-conned last week at our training camp so I am happy with how things went today.
Meintjes was 1min 27sec off the pace in 11th spot in the General Classification ahead of Friday’s sixth stage, a 183km trip from Saint-Bonnett-en-Chamsaur to Villard-de-Lans.
