Mogawane’s victory

Ofentse Mogawane ran to his second best performance of the season when he won the 400-metre final at a track and field meeting in Germany this week.

Mogawane was one of three South Africans in action at the International Askina meeting in the city of Kassel and was by far the stand-out athlete.

The former South African champion won in 45.75sec, his second best performance of 2011 after the 29-year-old clocked 45.59 in Zeulenroda on 29 May.

German athlete Thomas Schneider was runner-up in Kassel (45.90), whilst Jarrin Solomon (TRI) crossed the line in 46.64sec, for third position.

Mogawane ran 46.29sec earlier this year during the Yellow Pages SA Senior Championships in Durban in April, qualifying for the finals, but a bout of flu saw him withdraw from the final.

The other South Africans in action were Lebogang Moeng and PC Beneke. Moeng ran the same race at Mogawane but could only place seventh (47.31sec).  Beneke ran in the 400m hurdles and finished in 53.93sec, sixth in his heat. The race was won by Jack Green (GBR) won the event in 49.48sec.

Mogawane’s next stop will be Congo on June 12 where he will participate in Brazzaville.
