‘Monster’ winners

Hendrik Kruger and Theresa Ralph took gold in the men’s and women’s category of the ProNutro Magalies Monster MTB Classic (69.7km) that started and finished at the Buffelspoort Golf Course on Saturday.

Kruger said the ProNutro Magalies Monster was a very tough task.┬á ÔÇ£I was hoping for a win, but when I heard that Max Knox and Andrew McLean had entered, I didn’t think that a win would be possible.┬á I was part of a group of riders that managed to breakaway quite early in the race. It was at the 23km mark (King of the Mountains) that Max, Andrew and I split from the rest of the group.

“The Magalies Monster is very tough, both physically and mentally.┬á I enjoy the race because only tough people can do it.┬áI’ll definitely be back in 2012,ÔÇØ says Kruger, who completed the race in an impressive time of 3hr 18min 18sec. Knox placed second, while Bryce Munro finished third.

For Ralph it was a case of third time lucky having taken part consecutively for the past two years. ÔÇ£I competed in 2009 and 2010.┬á Taking part in the Monster is a huge achievement in itself, winning it is extra special.┬á The ProNutro Magalies Monster MTB Classic is one event that will always be on my to-do list.┬á It is both tough and technical.┬áI will definitely be back in 2012, now that I have a title to defend,ÔÇØ says Ralph, who completed the race in a deserving time 3:49:41.┬áAmy McDougall placed second, while Claudia Slattery finished third.

Munro and Ralph secured the titles of King and Queen of the Mountain when they crossed the 32km mark first in their respective categories.

Matthys Koekemoer was victorious in the men’s category of the 41.7km Classic.┬á Ryan Gibbons placed second, while Christoff Dames finished third.┬á Karin Hendry took gold in the women’s category of the race.┬á Mene Olivier placed second, while Miroda Vermeulen finished third.

Dirk Swanepoel took no prisoners in the men’s category of the 20.2km MTB Classic.┬áJohannes Steyn placed second, while Matthew Davies finished third.┬á Lindy Steenkamp was the lady to beat in the women’s race.┬áSamantha De Bruin placed second, while Veronika Van Heerden finished third.
