There was an early second and fourth placed finish for South African paddlers to get  Saturday’s Canoe Sprint World Cup event in Duisberg, Germany off to a start.
London Olympics bronze medallist in the 500m, Bridgitte Hartley (pictured above) took fourth in the frenetic 200m K1 C-Final dash with a 41.588sec finish as Portugal’s Francisca Laia won in 40.797.
Then Esti van Tonder took second spot in the B-Final of the K1 1000m long-haul behind China’s Yanan Wu.
The Pretoria athlete was happy with her 4:03.495 finish on day that also saw her lining up for the K1 500m heats.
‘The 1000 B-final was an awesome race going head to head with China [4:03.296] to the finish, ending up second just 0.2sec behind her,’ she told Road to Rio 2016.
‘The 500m heat was a toughie lining up with what felt like most of the A-final. Still, I raced my best but unfortunately didn’t manage to progress to the semis.’
She ended eighth in the third of six heats in 1:56.233 as Kiwi Lisa Carrington won in 1:49.885.
‘Happy with the race though and I’ll consider it a personal challenge to better my race by leaps and bounds at the next World Cup!’
Hartley had no problems in going through to the semi-finals in the next heat as she powered to second spot in 1:51.132 behind China’s Yu Zhou (1:50.213).
That saw her in semi-final one where she placed sixth in 1:51.910 as Belarussia’s Maryna Litvinchuk won in 1:48.561.
After having booked her berth in the C final the Richard’s Bay athlete ended her day with a victorious smile as she won that in 1:51.123 from Belgium’s Hermien Peters (1:51.457).
