Murray third in Montreal… and also third in rankings

Richard Murray has headed back to France for more training after a successful Canadian campaign.

The two-time Olympian took third in the ITU World Triathlon in Montreal, a week after finishing third in Edmonton also.

In Montreal, Murray clocked 1hr 48min 42sec for the 1500-metre swim, 40km bike and 10km cycle.

That put him 37sec down on second-placed Kristian Blummenfeldt of Norway, and a further 15sec down on Javier Gomez of Spain.

Murray has also moved up one spot in the world rankings, to lie third with 3197 points behind the Spanish duo of Mario Mola (3664) and Gomez (3361).

‘All in all, it was a good weekend’s racing,’ Murray told Team SA. ‘I didn’t expect that at the start, as my body was quite fatigued.

‘I didn’t have the best of swims and was abut 50 sec out behind Javier and some of the other top swimmers [he was out of the top 40!]

‘On the bike I didn’t really have the legs on the day, but strategically placed myself and then on the run I also wasn’t sure how the legs would feel.

‘But they started coming right after about 5-6km, and I managed to gap Mario and a few others and we caught about nine guys.

‘So yeah, I’m happy with my ranking of third, so now it’s back to training in Los Angeles in the French Pyrenees, and next race is the Rotterdam Grand final on 16 September.’
