Rene Kalmer and Lebogang Phalula kept South African women’s road running firmly in the spotlight on Sunday with fine performances in Europe.
Kalmer was racing the Berlin Marathon in Germany and Phalula the Singelloop 10km in Utrecht, Netherlands.
Thirty-three-year-old Kalmer raced to ninth spot in a race that saw Kenya’s Dennis Kimetto set a new world record of 2hr 02min 57sec.
Her time was 2:29:27, clipping 32sec off her previous best set in Yokohama, Japan.
‘I’m still on cloud nine after my performance of yesterday,’ Kalmer told Road to Rio 2016. ‘I’m really happy about a ninth position at a major marathon with a new PB of 2:29:27.
‘It’s also amazing to be in the race where a new world record is set. This was my first stepping stone towards Rio 2016 and I’m really excited to start training for a 2:27 marathon now.
‘I was on sub 2:28 pace till 35km, but found myself in no-man’s land for the last 6km.’
Kalmer went through 5km in 17:32, 10km in 35:00 and her halfway time was 73:43. Her average speed for the 42.2km event was 16.01kph.
‘It was great going into marathon with out any niggles or injuries. I’m off to Italy now for a post marathon holiday and when I get back to SA I’ll run some local races till the end of the year.’
Meanwhile in Netherlands Phalula took sixth spot, behind five Kenyan runners. Her time was 33:41.
‘My race was very good and I enjoyed it but I was looking forward to running a fastest time. But after all I’ve been through I’m back in business again. But I’m also happy with my performance so far,’ said the 2014 national women’s cross-country champion.
Phalula’s personal best for the 10km distance is 32:59.
