Powerful Fitzpatrick racks up yet another big title

Fitzpatrick

By Mark Etheridge

Kimberley’s Ricardo Fitzpatrick has powered his way to yet another international title, this time on local soil.

Competing in the -88kg weight division at the 2017 Commonwealth Powerlifting and Bench Press championships in Potchefstroom, 36-year-old Fitzpatrick emerged triumphant to take his fifth international bench press title.

The Remitto-sponsored lifter was up against New Zealand Matt Gordon and Great Britain’s Kyle Gordon for podium places.

Fitzpatrick bench pressed 172.5kg while Matt Gordan’s best was a 165kg and Kyle’s 125kg.

‘Matt had an accident back in 2010 when a barn door weighing 450kg fell on top of him and folded him in half. Doctors predicted that he’d never walk again but Matt truly believed he would walk again,’ says Fitzpatrick.

‘His physio recommended that he should bench press and do para-powerlifting competitions because of the physical strength he showed during his recovery after the accident.

‘Matt is really a great person and friend – he is still young and has tremendous talent in the sport and it was great competing against him.’

Both him and Fitzpatrick will now move on to Mexico City, Mexico for the 2017 Para Powerlifting Championships from 30 September.

‘I’ll be looking at both improving my world ranking and getting a slot for South Africa for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics,’ concluded Fitzpatrick.
