Queen’s Baton continues its tour of Mpumalanga

On Thursday, the Queen’s Baton continued with its tour of Mpumalanga, the province where the sun rises.

It was a day for the hosting province to showcase the aesthetics of nature which makes the province such an awesome tourist destination.

The delegation visited Thaba Chweu Local Municipality where the executive mayor, Selina Mashigo Sekgobela, warmly welcomed them. After receiving the Queen’s Baton, the Thaba Chweu community members and school children accompanied the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and SASCOC delegation to view God’s Window, the Potholes and the Three Rondavels respectively.

The tour guide gave an interesting history of all the three international tourist attractions and explained why Mpumalanga is such a unique province.

After visiting these three places, the Queen’s Baton Relay delegation ended the day by visiting the Leroro Community where members of all ages were happy to receive and march with the Baton.

The vice-president of the CGF, Gideon Sam, encouraged the communities’ youth to use sport as a tool to fight crime and to always aim higher. Said Sam: “Your province is special on the map because the Queen’s Baton passed through here. You have touched it like all other 70 Commonwealth countries will do, so you are very important people here in Mpumalanga.”

He further went on to encourage the youth to participate in sport so that the province also produces athletes who will be part of Team South Africa at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.

Various local cultural groups treated the Queen’s Baton relay team to some fine traditional dance performances.

The Queen’s Baton ends its journey in South Africa on Friday as the delegation heads for Kruger National Park before leaving the South African shores for Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday.
