Now London for Ramaala

No one has competed for South Africa in an Olympics more than Hendrik Ramaala. And the four-time Olympian called on all his experience to win the Nedbank Matha Series 21km race in Middelburg, the perfect warm-up for his assault on the London Marathon on April 26.

Ramaala, who along with swimmer Ryk Neethling is the most accredited South African Olympian, crossed the line in a quick 63min 12sec (at altitude) and pocketed R20,000 for breaking sweat.

He was chased all the way to the line by Norman Dlomo (63:32) and Zimbabwe’s Wirimai Juwawo (63:45).┬á

ÔÇ£I wanted to run just under 63 minutes but the two long up hills stopped that but I am still happy with today’s time it shows everything is on line for a good run in London, I just hope the weather is good there because I don’t like the cold stuff,ÔÇØ Ramaala said.

In the women’s race the Zimbabwean Sharon Tavengwa (the recent Nedbank Johannesburg Marathon winner), had a tough time against Lesotho’s Mamorallo Tjoka, but held on to win by eight seconds in 75:54.

ÔÇ£April is the happy month and it is also my birth month that is why I am so happy all the time. I am now preparing to run a 10km in Scotland in a few months time, so it is back to tough training for me,ÔÇØ Tavengwa said.
