Rik, Izak win in France

Rik de Voest and Izak van der Merwe have both moved through to the second round of qualifying for the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris.

The duo were both in first round action on Tuesday, writes Mark Etheridge. Ranked 29th in the qualifying draw, Van der Merwe beat Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp in straight sets, 6-1-7-6 (7-3).

Van der Merwe, 138th on the ATP Tour rankings, needed just 81 minutes to reckon with Zopp, firing down three aces to two and recording a 66% first service percentage compared to his opponent’s 56%. Zopp comes in at 201st on the world rankings.

De Voest also went through in straight sets, 6-3 7-6 (7-5), beating Slovakia’s Ivo Klec in a match lasting five minutes short of three hours.

Outgunned in the aces department 4-2, De Voest had the slightly better first service percentage at 54% to 48%.

Van der Merwe will now face David Guez from France (ranked 158th) whilst De Voest has by far the tougher task as he’s up against top-seeded qualifier Alex Bogomolov of America. Bogomolov is currently ranked at No84.

Our top-ranked singles player, Kevin Anderson, will be part of the main draw when it is made later this week, while our top-ranked Chani Scheepers, who powered her way to the fourth round last year, could also make the main draw.
