Sanders regroups after icy Edmonton experience

By Mark Etheridge

Despite two below-par performances in her last two outings, Commonwealth Games team silver medallist Gillian Sanders is hoping to bounce back as the triathlon season winds down.
Sanders had an unfortunate recent run-in of the canine kind a while back as she tweaked a calf muscle while training at her London base.
But then it was the cold climes of Edmonton that put a damper on her race to qualify for the Rio Olympics and at the grand final in Chicago she was still suffering the after-effects of the big chill.
‘Edmonton was just freezing, I couldn’t feel my body the whole race, the temperature was six degrees and pouring with rain.
‘But I survived and came 24th with the calf holding out,’ she told Road to Rio 2016. ‘Next up was Chicago and I felt awful the whole race. I was feeling really tired in the lead up and think I may have overdone it in the 12 days between the races, not realising how much the cold in Edmonton took out of me.
‘I couldn’t have gone any harder in Chicago, my body was just not cooperating.’ She ended up placing 41st as American speedster Gwen Jorgensen won again.
‘I was obviously very disappointed. But hopefully some good rest, and letting my body recover will help… there’s just one more race in the season to finish on a high,’ she concluded.
