The former coach of South Africa’s No1 tennis player Kevin Anderson, Neville Godwin, was named Coach of The Year at the 2017 ATP World Tour Awards presented by Moët & Chandon held at the Nitto ATP Finals on Thursday evening at the Tower of London.

Forty-two-year-old Johannesburg based Godwin was nominated amongst some of the world’s top coaches in this ‘non-public voting’ category, alongside Ivan Ljubicic (Roger Federer), Martin Laurendeau (Denis Shapovalov), Toni Nadal and Carlos Moya (Rafael Nadal) and Alexander Zverev Sr. (Alexander Zverev & Mischa Zverev).

‘I’m honored to have won this award, especially that it was decided by my fellow coaches,’ said Godwin in an acceptance speech of his award. ‘This year holds so many incredible stories on the tour, and I’m entirely delighted to have been part of it.’

Godwin said that having played professional tennis at the highest level assisted him in becoming the coach he is today. ‘To gain the respect from the player you’re coaching is critically important to the success of the partnership, and having played pro before, I was able to understand Kevin and our communication was solid throughout my four years working with him.’ he concluded.

Godwin, a former world No90 ranked and South African Davis Cup player won an ATP World Tour title (Newport) during his career.

He also guided Anderson since 2014 and coached him into breaking into the world’s top 10, and reaching a first ever Grand Slam final at this year’s US Open.
