SA’s top seeds into semis in Stellenbosch

seeds

While everything went pretty much according to plan in the men’s draw at Friday’s quarter-finals of the Digicall Futures 1 tennis tournament being played in Stellenbosch, the women’s division delivered some interesting surprises.

Men’s top seed, South Africa’s Nik Scholtz had little trouble against Frenchman, Tom Jomby and won the first scheduled match of the day 6-2 7-6 (4).

Second seed, Takanyi Garanganga of Zimbabwe and fourth seed Leny Mitjana of France joined the South African in the semi-finals. The only upset was when third seed Benjamin Lock of Zimbabwe had trouble against Peter Heller, going down 6-3 7-5 to the German.

Scholtz will now face Heller, and Garanganga will play against Mitjana in Saturday’s semi-finals.

It was in the women’s draw that the seeded players – especially the Russian sisters, Anastasia and Anna Pribylova struggled.

Top seed Chanel Simmonds won her match against Canadian Petra Januskova in straight sets, 6-4 6-1.

The South African will now come up against Nina Stadler of Switzerland who somewhat unexpectedly beat eighth seed Anna Pribylova 6-4 7-5.

The other semi-final will see unseeded Naomi Totka of Hungary and fourth seed Leonie Kung of Switzerland do battle. Totka got the better of second seeded Anastasia Pribylova in her quarter-final, winning 6-0 3-6 6-3.
