SA’s Van der Burgh, Le Clos into finals

Olympic medallists Cameron van der Burgh and Chad le Clos both won through to their respective finals at the Fina swimming world championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Tuesday.

After Van der Burgh had won his 50-metre breaststroke heat in the morning and then watched Adam Peaty set a world record in the very next heat, it was much of the same in the evening semi-finals.

He ended second in his semi-final, clocking 26.74sec behind Brazilian Felip Lima, who was 0.06sec quicker to the wall.

And then came Peaty’s repeat performance, as he set yet another world record.

In the morning the Briton swam 26.10sec to take 0.32sec off his own best… it got better as he won the second semi in an amazing 25.95sec, he first man to go under the 26-second barrier.

Van der Burgh’s fellow London and Rio Olympian, Chad le Clos, is also into a final as he took third in his 200m butterfly semi-final.

As was the case in the morning heats, Le Clos had to play second fiddle to Hungarian home-boy Lazlo Cseh in his semi-final.

He went 1:55.09 behind Cseh’s 1:54.22 and another Hungarian Tamas Kendersi (1:54.98).

That only puts him fourth fastest though, going into the final after Japan’s Daiya Seto swam 1:54.03 to make him hot favourite for the gold.
