SASCOC celebrates its 10th anniversary

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) joyfully celebrates its tenth anniversary today.

Since its founding on 27 November 2004, SASCOC has successfully prepared and delivered Team South Africa to all multi-sport international games such as the Olympics, Paralympics, Winter Olympics, Winter Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Youth Games, World Games, All Africa Games, African Youth Games and Region 5 Games.

SASCOC, the controlling body for all South African high performance sport was formed by representatives of all sports bodies as a Section 21 Company at a General Meeting in November 2004.

Prior to that, a meeting of major stakeholders on 27 November 2000, saw the then Minister of Sport and Recreation, Mr Ngconde Balfour, appoint a Ministerial Task Team to investigate High Performance sport in South Africa. This team was given a mandate to identify and look into factors which impact negatively on South Africa’s sporting performance and coming up with recommendations.

Subsequently, recommendations were tabled and one of the main endorsements for Team SA was to rationalise all duplications and provide a seamless integrated athlete support program both in terms of team preparation and team presentation.

Various predecessor bodies of SASCOC were therefore dissolved in 2005 and their functions relating to high performance sport were taken over by SASCOC.

SASCOC President, Gideon Sam: “Today as we celebrate 10 years of existence, we can proudly say that at SASCOC, we know where we have come from and where we are going. We want to stand proudly on sports podiums throughout the world, flying our flag and singing our national anthem.

“We want to demonstrate that sport has the power to unite, as former President Nelson Mandela correctly stated, and that drives us at SASCOC. Here’s looking forward to the next 10 years of growth and prosperity for SA sport.”

SASCOC CEO, Tubby Reddy added: ‘Although we acknowledge the inevitable challenges which we faced in the initial years of SASCOC’s formation we have today come to the point where we can be rightfully proud of all successes we have recorded in the past decade.

‘Team SA has participated in numerous multicode games since 2005 and down the years we’ve noted a great improvement in the medal tally. We have retained first place on the African continent in terms of the medal table at all the Commonwealth Games, which South Africa has participated in – except in 1994 where we came third.

‘In addition to that, we have performed with distinction at the Olympics, and numerous other international events. As we celebrate our 10th birthday, we are extremely proud of all these achievements.”
