SASCOC congratulates recipients of National Orders

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) extends its warmest congratulations to all recipients of the National Orders to be presented by President Jacob Zuma on Freedom Day, Sunday 27 April, 2014.

National Orders are the highest awards that South Africa bestows on both its citizens as well as eminent foreign nationals who have played a pivotal role towards the progression of democracy and thereby making a significant impact on improving the lives of South Africans.

In the sports sector, we wish to applaud world champion wheelchair tennis player and Paralympian, Lucas Sithole who will receive the silver Order of Ikhamanga. He is being awarded for bearing witness to resilience after being involved in a serious accident in 1998 but going on to take a positive stance after this misfortune and excelling in tennis in the quad category.

Cameron van der Burgh, 2012 Olympic champion in the 100m breaststroke and current world record holder in the 50 and 100m breaststroke disciplines, Paralympic track athlete Fanie van der Merwe, and owner of Jomos Cosmos soccer club Ephraim Matsilele will also receive the same Order of Ikhamanga (silver) for their outstanding contributions in sports.

Mokgadi Caster Semenya, gold medallist in the womens 800m category at the 2009 World Championships and silver medallist at both the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 Olympics will receive an Order which will be bestowed in bronze.

Says SASCOC CEO, Tubby Reddy: SASCOC commends a job well done by each and every recipient of the National Orders. These true heroes have contributed immensely towards the countrys progression and in unifying our nation.

This is the 20th ceremony since the inception of the new National Orders system, contributing towards unity, reconciliation, transformation and nation building.
