Schoeman out to make it fourth African title in a row

By Mark Etheridge

Sunday’s African and South African Triathlon Championships will see Commonwealth Games medallist Henri Schoeman and up and coming Basson Engelbrecht going head to head as they defend their respective titles.
East London is the venue for the combined events after Schoeman had won the African Champs title in Egypt last year.
He opened his season in Abu Dhabi two weeks ago as he recovered from a knee injury.
He told Road to Rio 2016: ‘Abu Dhabi was really just a tester to see where I’m with fitness and my running, as I’ve been out with injury.
‘I was very pleased with the way I swam and biked. I stretched the swim and tried to make a break happen on the bike. Unfortunately the chase packs were a little more motivated and managed to close the gap. I ran well for 4km but the fitness to run 10km fast was just not there yet.’
But just as things were starting to pick up for the Durban based multi-code specialist, he was dealt another blow.
‘Since Abu Dhabi I’ve been down with sickness but I have had some good training and the running seems to be getting there again.
‘I won’t be in the form I wanted to be to win my fourth consecutive title but I’ll still give it my best shot. I won’t be rested either as training for the WTS events is vital as I have already missed so much.’
Also in the mix will be former world junior champion Wian Sullwald who is also recovering from injury.
