Sprint duo star in Paarl

It’s all systems go for Olympic sprint canoe hopefuls Mike Arthur and Shaun Rubenstein after the recent Western Province provincial championships in Paarl, writes Mark Etheridge.

“It turned out to be a really good regatta for us, especially in the K2 category,” said Rubenstein.┬á “We managed to win the K2 500m and 200m with more than a boat length lead which gave us quite a good indication that we are going fairly well in the K2.

“Unfortunately the distances weren’t measured exactly right and therefore we can’t use our times an indication of performance.”

The K1 races were dominated by an out-of-town competitor in the shape of Greg Louw. The Eastern Cape paddler made the trip down to the Cape and left for home with two gold medals packed into his baggage.

“Greg had a great day racing and he managed to win the 500m and 200m K1, narrowly beating me in the 500m and Mike in the 200m, while I was just behind in third spot in the 200m,” said Rubenstein who also expressed his happiness at the way things were panning out for him and Arthur.

“We are happy with the racing as it formed part of our three weeks of intensive training block. Last week was recovery week from heavy training, we will pick up the training intensity this week again and then build up to the SA selection races on 3 May followed by SA championships that same weekend.”
