TDF time trial is a means to an end for Dimension

For Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, Monday’s Tour de France stage three team time trial was just about getting through the stage with as little hassle as possible.

BMC Racing won the stage, placing Greg van Avermaet in the overall race leaders’ yellow jersey.

Team Sky finished in second place with Quickstep-Floors rounding out the stage podium.

Without a general classification contender, the pressure was off Africa’s only TDF outfit on the day as the GC teams battled it out for overall honours.

BMC Racing set the early benchmark, and while Team Sky came close to the American team, finishing just four seconds adrift, BMC’s time of 38min 46sec would stand the test of time.

Dimension Data averaged 52.4km/h for the 35km course, stopping the clock 1:53 behind BMC, and in 20th position on the day.

Commenting on the course, team rider Julien Vermote said: ‘It was a nice course today, really fast. We did a good recon of the stage so we got through the stage safely, which was the most important aspect for us.

‘You always need to go just that bit harder in a TTT and it is a technical discipline but we were able to get through it well. Tomorrow’s [Tuesday] stage is really important for us so that is our next key objective.’
