Team SA ready to roll

Resplendent in their ethnic white and black outfits, Team South Africa joined the party at the opening ceremony of the All Africa Games in Maputo on Saturday evening, writes Mark Etheridge.

South Africa, boasting one of the bigger teams at this, the 10th version of the Games, were second into the impressive, brand-new stadium, behind Algeria, who topped the medal table at the last games held in Algiers four years ago.

In the team’s midst was flag-bearer Gift Pilane, one of our medal contests in the 49kg division of the boxing code at these games.

The ceremonial parade of the teams was spectacular, and richly colourful afair and the crowd, packing the stadium to about two-thirds capacity, erupted when the host nation Mozambique were 37th and last into the stadium.

A nice touch was spectators in the south-eastern stand holding up lights that spelled out Mozambique as the huge local entourage entered the stadium.

Team South Africa are in action on a number of fronts on Sunday, including triathlon, boxing, men’s football, netball and table tennis.

The first medals should come from triathlon before three of the members head east for World Championships in Beijing, China next weekend.
