Trio aim for Beijing

Triathlon South Africa has selected three para-triathletes to represent South Africa at the 2011 World Championships in Beijing from 9-11 September.

KZN’s Oswald Kydd, Paul Nel from the Eastern Cape and Chris Wagner from Western Province will be on their way east come September.

The T1 category is for athletes who are paraplegic, quadriplegic, have polio or are double leg amputees. For the cycle a recumbent handcycle and a racing wheel chair is used on the run. Nel will be competing in this category. Nel was involved in a bike accident in 2009 and was left with his lower leg crushed and multiple other injuries. After breaking his prosthesis four times in two months, Nel eventually went to the UK for a new one and started to train for the Iron Man competition in 2011. He finished in 16hr 14min 28sec.

Kydd, 42, will be competing in the T2 Category which is for athletes who have severe leg impairment, including above the knee amputees. The athletes in the T2 category have to ride bicycles and run with above the knee prosthesis (or a similar prosthesis) or run using crutches. Kydd lost his right leg in a cycling accident in 1997 when he was hit by a truck. In August 2008 he was involved in another accident in which he lost his prosthetic leg.

This though has not stopped him from competing, and Kydd will be returning to the World Championships after his third place in 2010.

Wagner is also no stranger to competing at the world championships, having finished second in the 2006 event.
