Sprint double for Thuso

Thuso Mpuang spearheaded a field day for South African athletes at the annual Weltklasse Meeting in Biberach, Germany on Tuesday.

The young sprinter raced to a 100/200-metre double with victories of 10.47 and 20.65 seconds respectively, writes Mark Etheridge.

There was also another win for 400m ace Ofentse Mogawane. Coming after his runners-up spot in Poland at the weekend, he clocked 45.68sec, to better his time in Poland by 0.10sec.

There was more success for middle-distance ace Pharson Magagane in the 1500m as he won a close finish in 3:42.37.

Our shot-putters didn’t pick up as much success as the track runners and failed to medal. Roelie Potgieter had a best effort of 19.30m to put him seventh behind

German David Storl’s winning effort of 20.88. Fellow South African Orazio Cremona took 10th in 18.34m.

In the women’s competition, sprinter Carina Horn took third spot in the 200m with a 24.01 effort. Winning time was English athlete Esther Cremer’s 23.77. In the same race Estie Wittstock took eighth in 24.64.

Commonwealth discus champion Elizna Naude filled fifth in Tuesday night’s competition with a 55.16 best effort. Winning throw of the night belonged to Cuban Yarelis Barrios with a 62.46m throw.
