Under-23’s qualify

Despite going down 1-0 to Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday, our national Under-23 soccer team has qualified for the 10th All Africa Games tournament.

The hosts scored their winning goal through Donald Ngoma in the 48th minute but South Africa qualify on a 2-1 aggregate following their 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe two weeks ago at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton, Johannesburg.

The Shakes Mashaba-led side becomes the second South African team to qualify for the 10th All Africa Games which will be held from in September this year in Maputo, Mozambique. Banyana Banyana has also qualified.

The Under-23 team returns to South Africa on Monday. The next step to a spot at next year’s Olympics in London will be the last stage of the African preliminaries. That will be staged as a mini-tournament in December where the eight remaining sides will play at a central venue still to be decide.

The top three teams at that tournament will go on to the Olympics while the fourth-placed side plays off against an Asian opponent to seal their berth.

Our Under-23s last played in the Olympics in Australia, 2000 where they recorded a memorable 3-1 win over Brazil in Brisbane.
