Underwater hockey gold for SA women

Another aquatic sporting accolade came the way of South Africa in Europe at the weekend.
A sport that so often flies under the radar, on this occasion it was the Under-19 women’s team who made waves by winning the Underwater Hockey World Championships in Castellon de la Plana, Spain on Sunday.
History as this was the first time since the the inception of the World Championships in 2004 that the New Zealand women’s team had been beaten.
South Africa beat the Kiwis 3-2 in the final. That after winning every one of their previous games.
They opened their campaign with a 9-0 win against Australia, and then went on to beat New Zealand 2-0 and Colombia 2-1 in their next two games. Their biggest win was a 12-0 thrashing of the Netherlands and then went on to beat France 5-0 and Great Britain 7-0 before overcoming Colombia again (4-0) in the semi-final.
The Under-19 SA men started off well with three straight victories but would eventually go on to end fifth while the SA U-23 men’s side took seventh spot.
South African aquatics is in the news for all the right reasons lately after the country won five medals at the recent FINA World Championships in Russia. The men’s water polo players won their first match at a World Championships, finishing 12th, their highest ever international ranking and still the top side in Africa.
